The three clocks that decide your timeline
Almost every visa delay from South Africa comes down to one of three clocks, and knowing which one applies to your destination tells you when to start:
- The decision clock — how long the authority takes once it has your application. For e-visa countries this is the only clock, which is why Saudi Arabia and Turkey feel instant.
- The appointment clock — the wait for a biometric or interview slot before processing even starts. It's the hidden first stage for the UK and Schengen, and it's practically the whole story for the United States.
- The passport clock — some routes, like China and the UK, hold your physical passport while they work. If you have another trip in between, that clock matters more than the decision itself.

When to apply: the working-backwards rule
Take your departure date and subtract the top of the range above, then add two weeks of buffer for queries, load-shedding-proof courier time and plain bad luck. Practically, from South Africa that means: e-visa destinations two weeks out, the UK and Schengen six to eight weeks out, Australia and Canada around eight weeks out, and the United States a full quarter ahead. Applying very early has limits too — Schengen accepts applications at most six months before travel.
